INTBAU Nigeria is the first chapter opened in Africa and aims to bring together practitioners, academics, community leaders and general supporters in order to promote the values of traditional building, architecture and urbanism and together find solutions for the major challenges concerning the built environment and in Africa.

Culture, defined as the expression of human values in development is always changing due to external factors. In the deterioration of natural resources, culture is taking its place as an important generator of economic growth because it is the core to human development. Charles Leadbeater said – “The real assets of modern economy come out of our heads not the ground - Ideas, knowledge, skills, talent and creativity.” INTBAU Nigeria believes that by using culture to inform our work on Building, Architecture and Urbanism, the maintainance of traditional buildings and surroundings, revival and continuity of traditional skills, craftsmanship and theories in the built environment, are executed successfully and in a peaceful manner.

INTBAU Nigeria's main aims are to:

  • Create research opportunities into the traditional buildings of the different geographical zones of Nigeria
  • Advocate for the preservation and promotion of traditional buildings with emphasis on the use of local earth or timber construction technologies
  • Engage in awareness campaigns about the traditional built environment through seminars, conferences an workshops
  • Encourage local communities in using traditional building materials such as earth, timber or straw.   This can reduce poverty and prevent rural - urban drift as well as contribute to the sustainable development and tourism potentials in village settings.

We welcome enquiries from individuals and organizations interested in contributing to our charity and events.   Please contact INTBAU Nigeria for more information.
