INTBAU Poland - Podkowa Lesna Endangered Architectural Detail Workshop The architectural styles and their detail define the character of a historic town. In most of the Polish towns the detail is in danger of disappearing. This part of historic heritage is endangered the most and generally regarded as less important. New building technology and market pressures incline the historic properties' owners into replacement instead of repair of original features. This heritage is a link of the garden-city communities to their cultural history. The detail crafted by trades people is an important part of architectural history of Poland. It defines the character of architecture from the 1920-30s, when Polish national style in architecture was created, and can be an inspiration for contemporary design. Loss of this heritage, through gradual erosion, thoughtless and inept repairs and "improvements", will empty the garden-cities of their genius loci.

INTBAU Poland - Podkowa Lesna Endangered Architectural Detail Workshop The objective of the project is to document endangered detail, highlight the value, beauty and environmental economy of repair and recycling of architectural detail, raise awareness of importance of this heritage, focus attention of the local communities and authorities on the importance and beauty of this unexpectedly fragile heritage. The organizers also want to reinforce the discussion about the link between historic preservation and ecology. The subject of Polish national style in architecture will be the main subject for discussion.

The workshop in 2008 is a continuation of the project from 2005 and 2007. The materials collected during the workshop, together with the materials the previous years will be used for a publication of a small catalogue/guidebook for 1 day tour in the garden-city: "Podkowa Lesna, Museum of the XX Century Architecture". The guidebook will be prepared in November/December 2008.

    Project outcomes
