Dinyar Wadia is an American residential designer born in Bombay/Mumbai, India. He completed a six-year programme at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in India, a curriculum that included a year’s study of fine arts and several courses in landscape architecture. He later emigrated to America and in 1968 enrolled at Columbia University for a graduate degree in architecture and graduated as a William Kinney Fellow at the top of his class.
Mr. Wadia began his love affair with traditional architecture growing up in Mumbai where as a student he was required to measure timeless classics and draw portions of them by hand like The Gateway to India and Victoria Terminus. Dinyar’s designs continue to be informed by the past and built for the future.
Work
Dinyar Wadia set up his own practice in 1975 to design traditionally inspired homes. Rather than specialize in a single type of design, Dinyar Wadia’s business philosophy has always been to excel at all traditional styles of architecture. Over the past 45 years, he has demonstrated a remarkable versatility and adaptability with projects ranging, for example, from a Colonial Revival farmhouse to a French Normandy chateau; a Georgian style mansion to a quaint English country potting shed and greenhouse; or an informal American shingle style home to a Tudor manor house.
Regardless of the architectural style, Wadia’s design philosophy emphasizes a strict attention to detail, exceptional workmanship, the use of luxurious materials sourced locally, and the integral relationship between a house and its surrounding landscape. Rather than indiscriminately tearing down trees to facilitate the construction phase of a project, Wadia takes pains to site each residence so that it is nestled naturally into the surrounding landscape. Likewise, he goes to great lengths to ensure that windows are positioned to their best advantage to capture the natural light and look out over a special view. If there is a single theme that characterizes all of his projects, it is that his homes seem to work themselves into the garden in an artful embrace.
Together with his (ever growing) talented team of 12 architects, an interior designer, construction managers and numerous support staff, Wadia has been successful in reinterpreting the past and updating it for the present and into the future.
