The 2016 Seville Summer School Summer School was organised by the Premio Rafael Manzano and the School of Architecture of the University of Notre Dame, thanks to the support of the Richard H. Driehaus Charitable Lead Trust and the collaboration of the Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio, the Universidad de Sevilla, the Universidad de Alcalá, the Universidad de Miami, the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría, the Real Academia Sevillana de Buenas Letras, the Fundación Medinaceli, INTBAU Spain and the Centro de Investigación de Arquitectura Tradicional (CIAT).
Students and professors from several Spanish and American universities worked together in Seville from 18 June to 2 July. The organizing team and faculty were Alejandro García Hermida, Frank Martínez, Lucien Steil and Samir Younés. They were helped in organizing it by Rebeca Gómez-Gordo and Julia Manzano. The participants coming from seven different countries were : Samira Albiac, Javier Ballesteros, Pablo Bañasco, Callie Beal, Gaétane Borne, Elizabeth Connaughton, Paula García, Rafael Gómez, Alexandria Gordon, Taryn Gutiérrez, Silvia Huelves, Zeynep Iqbal, Valérie Julien, Nirui Kang, Samie Kayani, Patrick Keough, Abner Samuel Lima González, Ruth López Calzada, Gonzalo Luengo, Michael Madsen, Eduardo Mascagni, Rafael Moreno, Esteban Orellana, Mª Angeles Sainz de Rozas, Miguel Segovia, Eric Stalheim, Isabela Tiñana Díaz, Margherita Tommassi, Mary Catherine Walter and Yueting Zhang.
Many others collaborated with teaching, lecturing or supporting us in different ways, including Mª Cruz Aguilar, Antonio Collantes, Joaquín Egea, Antonio Gámiz, Luis Fernando Gómez-Stern, Donald Gray, Vicente Lleó, José Peral, Fernando Quiles, Kathy Rodgers, Rafael Valencia, Luna Medina, Harriet Wennberg, Carol Wyant and, of course, Rafael Manzano. All faculty and participants have collaborated to exchange knowledge and experiences, thus enriching the results of this initiative.
This international summer school of architectural and urban design was primarily aimed to introduce participants to the use of local traditions of architecture and urbanism as a tool for upgrading the contemporary practice of architecture and urbanism. The existing city was used as a primary resource, given its complex set of time-tested designs, and understood as able to provide current designers with a large palette of successful references to be used, as well as with examples of failed decisions to be avoided.
The final results of these two weeks of work were publicly presented, thanks to the Fundación Medinaceli, at the beautiful former stables of the Casa de Pilatos.
