Barcelona offers an abundance of object lessons through its heritage of art, design and architecture. The mission is to make that as yet invisible city visible by means of the visual language of drawing and representation and pursuing the following objectives:
– to have a strong understanding of Barcelona’s diverse history, culture, traditions, art, planning initiatives, and architectural practices;
– to be able to perform architectural and urban design technical sketching from observation to more formal layouts;
– to gain immense knowledge on the famous architects and master planners, such as Antoni Gaud√¨ (the Sagrada Familia, Casa La Pedrera, Park Guell, etc) and Ildefons Cerdá (the Exaimple town extension);
– to learn about innovative environmental practices that originate in Barcelona; and
– to be exposed to heritage regeneration, methods for intensification, and how to build active social cohesion through environmental design.
The programme will be chaired by Prof. Giuseppe Amoruso, PhD, INTBAU Italia Chair and Professor at School of Design, Politecnico di Milano.
The programme also has the support of one of INTBAU’s newest Chapters, INTBAU Espana.

The Barri Gotic is the starting point of any exploration in Barcelona. From human-castling building in Plaça Jaume to the history-steeped backstreets around the La Seu cathedral and the laidback, arty bars and cafes of its squares. From the Roman Citadel to the Gotic Barrio, Barcelona is a picturesque place, full of street art landmarks, photogenic scenes and textures.

28 April The Traditional Architecture of Spain: the Poble Espanol

Built for the International Exposition of 1929, Poble Espanyol is a large-scale model village celebrating architectural styles from all over Spain. The Plaça Espanya provides the most popular access to the area and to the park of Montju√Øic; in the Avenida de la Reina Maria Cristina la Fontana Magica is waiting to amaze you.

29 April The Garden City Utopia and the Magical Landscape of Park Guell
- AM (09:00) from station Marina take the line 1 (red) towards Hospital Bellvitge, change at Catalunya station on line 3 (green) towards Trinitat Nova to Lesseps station.
Park Guell (open 10:00-20:00) is a magical place that emulates an English garden city. After seeing the gatehouses, based on designs for the opera Hansel and Gretel, you can walk up a splendid staircase, past a mosaic lizard to what once was a marketplace.

29 April The Last Great Temple: The Sacred Geometry of the Sagrada Familia

Gaud√≠’s fairytale architectures: the Sagrada Familia a breathtaking and grotesque giant where the protuberances create a stone tapestry of Christ’s life.

The Catalan modernisme: la manzana de la discordia
- PM (14.00) from station Liceu, take the line 3 (green) towards Canyelles to Diagonal station
In the Passeig de la Gràcia (Passeig de Gràcia, 43), there are some masterpieces: Gauss Casa Batlló, built for textile tycoon and La Pedrera (09:00 20:00) that hosts the Espai Gaudi. Nearby, you can gaze at his rivals’ architecture: the shiny Casa Amatller by Puig i Cadafalch, and the Casa Lleó Morera by Domènech i Montaner. Nearby, you’ll find his Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, whose city gardens offer a pleasant oasis amid the bustling city.

Eixample, the modern city extension designed by Ildefons Cerd√†, walking along Passeig de la Gràcia and study a template of urban boulevard, an introduction to the Catalan Modernisme.

STUDENT EVALUATION / DRAWING ASSIGNMENTS
The Art of Building Cities: Barri Gòtic (10%): Gothic district tour, urban typologies and pattern language drawing assignment.
The traditional architecture of Spain: the Poble Espanyol (10%): Architectural typologies and drawing assignment; the lexicon of traditional architecture drawing assignment and review.
The Garden city utopia and the magical landscape of Park Guell (10%): The garden cities & the city of utopia and the elements of landscape design drawing assignment.
The last great temple: a walk between imagination and reality (10%): Visit to the Sagrada Familia; Geometry, space and design drawing assignment
The Catalan Modernism: la manzana de la discordia(10%): Casa La Pedrera visit, building composition, floor layout, interior design drawing assignment and review.
The extension of Modern Barcelona: the Eixample (10%): Streetscape design, form, materials, textures and street furnitures drawing assignment.
Final Presentation (15%): Presentations will last approximately 15 minutes per student.
Participation: (10%) All students are expected to participate actively in the activities and are requested to do field drawing assignments. Note that participation implies active contributions to group discussions. Attendance at all course activities is mandatory.
Sketchbook: (15%) Sketchbook has to be completed in all its pages giving relevance to personal interpretation of sites through sketches, renderings and graphic analysis.

The cost will be €800 (for applications received by 7 February) per person and includes a 7-night stay in a double room in the central area of Barcelona at the University Residence Hall, organization fees, educational activities in English and Italian, a tourbook, a welcome kit and a Moleskine Japanese pocket album, private tours and museum tickets (Poble Espanyol, Park Guell, Casa La Pedrera, Sagrada Familia), lectures, field drawing, art advisor, travelcards/local transports, welcome party at Can Paixano, breakfast, lunch meals, social dinner and farewell aperitivo (traditional food and drink).
The fee does not include any airport shuttle costs, travel tickets, or health insurance.
Cancellation fees apply as follows:
More than 30 days prior to School start date, the cancellation fee is of 50% of the enrollment fee; an extra administrative fee will be charged according to international money transfer costs.
0-30 days prior to School start date and no-show, the cancellation fee is the entire enrollment fee.
Latecomer applications after 7 February: €1000.
