Announcing the Second Edition of Grassroots Grants Programme to Fund Community-Driven Solutions in the Built Environment

Calling all academics, craftspeople, designers, entrepreneurs, architects, start-ups, or small business owners.

United Kingdom, London – November 2024– Following the success of our first round of the Grassroots Grant Programme, INTBAU delighted to launch the 2024-2025 round of the funding programme. This second edition will offer grants of up to £5000 to support innovative, localised solutions to today’s pressing built environment challenges.

According to UN-Habitat and World Bank figures, by 2030 up to three billion people will need new housing and basic infrastructure. Sustainable, indigenous, traditional, local, and vernacular design solutions have the potential to create built environments that are inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. However, many of the best ideas never make it to the mainstream.

In the 2023-24 edition, this programme drew over 70 applications from more than 30 countries across six continents, highlighting the global demand for support for community-based solutions. £25,000 GBP in seed funding was awarded to five inspiring projects that demonstrated innovative approaches to creating inclusive, safe, and resilient built environments.

The 2024-2025 round of the grants programme seeks to expand this impact by supporting even more local ideas that adapt building traditions for contemporary challenges.

Who Should Apply?

Proposals are invited from individuals or organisations with plans that promote, adapt, or advance traditional building techniques and local solutions, with the aim of creating better places for people to live. Whether demonstrating an innovative building method, conducting hands-on training, or researching sustainable materials, applicants with bold ideas for strengthening communities through design are encouraged to apply.

Successful applicants will receive the grant in 2025.

 Application Process and Timeline

  1. Expression of Interest: Applicants should submit an Expression of Interest (EoI) form, available on the INTBAU website, by 12:00 AM UTC on 19 January 2025. INTBAU encourages submissions of ideas in progress; fully developed proposals are not required at this stage.
  2. Second Phase: Shortlisted applicants will proceed to a second application phase, during which additional project details will be requested. All submissions will be reviewed by an international panel of experts from the INTBAU network. Finalists will be invited for interviews, with awardees announced in April 2025.
